About Peru Weather
Peru is one of the most geographically diverse countries on Earth, featuring three distinct regions: the coastal desert (Costa), the Andean highlands (Sierra), and the Amazon rainforest (Selva).
The coastal strip is one of the driest deserts in the world, receiving less than 50mm of rain annually in most areas. Lima experiences a unique microclimate with heavy fog (garúa) during winter months despite almost no rainfall.
The Andes create dramatic climate variations based on altitude. Cusco at 3,400m has cool temperatures year-round, while nearby valleys can be significantly warmer. The dry season (May-October) is ideal for trekking and visiting Machu Picchu.
The Amazon basin, covering over 60% of Peru, has a tropical rainforest climate with high humidity and rainfall throughout the year. Iquitos is one of the largest cities in the world not accessible by road.
Whether you're planning to trek the Inca Trail, surf in Mancora, explore the Amazon, or visit the Nazca Lines, understanding Peru's diverse weather patterns is essential for an optimal experience.
