About Eswatini Weather
Eswatini, the Kingdom formerly known as Swaziland, has a subtropical climate that varies dramatically across short distances thanks to its four distinct topographic zones. Despite being one of Africa's smallest countries, it packs cool mountain Highveld, fertile Middleveld, hot Lowveld and the breezy Lubombo plateau into a compact landscape.
The Highveld around Mbabane and Ezulwini receives the highest rainfall and enjoys mild temperatures year-round, occasionally dropping to single digits with frost on winter nights. In contrast, the Lowveld towns of Big Bend, Siteki and Lavumisa are hot and humid, regularly exceeding 30°C in summer when the sugar estates are in full production.
Most of Eswatini's rain falls between November and March, often as dramatic afternoon thunderstorms. The dry winter months from May to August are sunny and clear, making them the most popular time for visitors to explore Mlilwane, Hlane Royal National Park and the Malolotja Nature Reserve.
Our weather coverage spans towns across all four regions — Hhohho, Manzini, Lubombo and Shiselweni — from the capital Mbabane to remote settlements, so you can plan around the kingdom's varied micro-climates with confidence.
